The Gift of Life

The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity provides emergency care to the public region wide and responds to a variety of trauma emergencies every day. The Charity has completed more than 30,000 missions since 1991, averaging 3,500 airlifts per year, equating to nearly 10 per day. The helicopter is a familiar sight within the skies of the Midlands, and is one of the most established Air Ambulance Charities in the UK.

When John was off duty as a full-time paramedic, he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, time was of the essence with our response to ensure that he won his fight for life. John was treated at the scene and was airlifted to a specialist trauma unit at Selly Oak Hospital, and all within seven minutes! As a result of his accident, John suffered two punctured lungs, shattered pelvis, serious internal injuries and amputation of his lower left leg.

John, now works with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity managing the Legacies and Grants Department. His story is one of the countless lives that Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has helped. John said "I know better than most, that if I had not been airlifted I probably would not be here today. Working with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has given me a greater appreciation of the impact that a ‘Gift in a Will’ can make, to ensure this vital and committed service remains operational". 1 in 10 missions attended by Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is funded by a ‘Gift in a Will’.

Thankfully John’s story had a positive ending and he has now discovered new opportunities.
