CAR LANDS ON ROOF
An elderly car driver has had a ‘miraculous’ escape after the car he was in left the road and ended up on its roof at the bottom of an embankment.
The crash happened on the A41 between Cosford and Albrighton near to RAF Cosford at about 4.55pm on Tuesday.
The doctor and paramedic from the Midlands Air Ambulance at Cosford went to the scene in a rapid response vehicle and were backed up by a land ambulance.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
"The ambulance staff were told that there had been a collision between an Audi and a small car. The Audi rolled off the A41, through trees and landed on its roof on a country lane. Two members of the public pulled the driver out of the vehicle as they feared that the car might go on fire because of leaking petrol. The 73 year old man from Pattingham was stabilised at the scene. Due to the nature of the crash, the doctor on the air ambulance decided that the patient should go to the trauma centre at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The ambulance took the patient the short distance to RAF Cosford where he was transferred onto the aircraft and flown to hospital. After further assessment at the hospital, it became apparent that his only injury was a broken rib. A 69-year-old woman in the second car was checked over but was uninjured. There is no doubt that the man in the Audi has had a very very lucky escape from serious injury."

WMAS STAFF HELP SUPPORT AIR AMBULANCE

Members of WMAS Patient Transport Services (PTS) were found up against WMAS A&E staff on the football pitch this month to raised funds for Midlands Air Ambulance.

Talking about the event Tom Malam from WMAS Patient Transport Services said:
"It was a fiery start for both teams with PTS dominating the first half. During the second half both teams made rolling substitutions as old legs were tiring. A floating free kick from PTS was calmly tucked away into the back of the A&E net, only to it be ruled offside. With just 10 minutes left to the final whistle the match took a turn when a looping cross found its way into the PTS box and was finished off, with a spectacular goal by an A&E midfielder bring the final score was 1-0 to A&E. Overall £400 in total was raised and I would like to thank everyone who contributed in buying raffle tickets and donating money on the day. We were really pleased with the turnout; with approximately 100 people turning up to cheered on both sides throughout the 90 minutes."

Three ambulances, two air ambulances (Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance) a rapid response vehicle and a BASICS Emergency Medic were sent to the scene.
Senior Paramedic Manager, Jerry Penn-Ashman said:
"When crews arrived they found two cars with extensive front end damage. There was a single man in one of the vehicles. He was unconscious and had to be cut free. Ambulance staff treated him for a head injury and multiple fractures. He also had breathing difficulties. He was airlifted to the trauma centre at Selly Oak Hospital where medics were on standby. The other car had a mother and five children in it. The mum, who was approximately 30, also had to be cut free. She had neck pain and a possible fractured leg. She was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being taken by land to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. What was really good news was that all five of the children, who were aged about seven to 12 years, were all wearing seatbelts. There is little doubt in my mind that this saved them all from serious injury. They had a few minor cuts and bruises but none required hospital treatment. From an ambulance perspective, the incident went extremely well with excellent co-operations from the fire and rescue service."

FROM HORSE, DOWN EMBANKMENT
It’s not often you are grateful for smashing into a tree and breaking your leg. However, for a woman in Herefordshire, it saved her from potentially far more serious injuries.
The incident happened about 100 yards from the English / Welsh border in Pyfinch Wood, near to Callow Hill House which is just off the A 466 which runs between the village of Welsh Newton and Monmouth.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
"At around 10.45am on Wednesday morning, a 54 year old Monmouth woman was out riding a horse when she fell from the animal. Unfortunately for her, where she landed was the top of a long steep embankment. She had only rolled about six or seven feet fown when she struck a tree breaking her left leg. Had she not struck the tree she might have continued considerably further. A rapid response vehicle from the Welsh Ambulance Service was first on scene and was backed up by the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham. The paramedic on the response vehicle had managed to get fairly close in his vehicle but there was no way an ambulance could have got near. Even the helicopter could only get to about 50 yards due to the nearby trees. The ambulance staff splinted the woman’s leg while she was still on the slope and then moved her onto a spinal board. She was then carried up the slope and on to the waiting aircraft. She was then flown to Hereford County Hospital. The aircrew said that a number of people at the scene had proved extremely helpful helping to carry the woman to the helicopter. This was an awkward job because of the access difficulties, but close working between ambulance staff along with some help from bystanders ensured the woman got the best care possible."

After completing an initial assessment, the paramedic from the response vehicle quickly asked if one of the Midlands Air Ambulances was available; the aircraft from Cosford was immediately dispatched and landed in a car park opposite the scene.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
"It is not clear what happened but on arrival, the crews found the woman, who was approximately 40 years old, lying unconscious on the pavement and road with a very serious head injury. She sedated, then immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being airlifted to the Regional Trauma Centre at Selly Oak Hospital where doctors were on standby for her arrival."

SCHOOLBOY AIRLIFTED
A schoolboy has been airlifted to hospital after an incident while playing rugby in Staffordshire.
The incident happened at Chasetown Specialist Sports College in Pool Road, Chasetown, Burntwood at 1.10pm on Monday afternoon.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
"An ambulance was initially sent to the scene after a call saying the boy of 11 had suffered a neck injury during a rugby tackle. The crew assessed the boy and decided that although they did not believe the injury to be too serious, they had enough concerns that they asked for an air ambulance to fly the youngster for specialist care. The Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire was sent and landed close to where the youngster was. The lad was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital as a precaution. The aircrew said that the advantage of calling in the helicopter was that the boy was only a five minute flight to specialist paediatric care - it would probably have taken longer to drive to a local A&E department and the youngster was getting the best possible care."

WOMAN AIRLIFTED FROM MALVERNS
A woman has been airlifted from the Malvern Hills after injuring her ankle whilst out walking.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
"The woman, who was estimated to be in her 40’s couldn’t walk due to the injury. This is a good example of where the air ambulance is a really effective resource. It was able to land close by to the patient which meant that ambulance staff were not required to carry her the 20 minutes back to the nearest road which would not have been an easy task. The woman was flown to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

All CFR groups within the Region are trained by West Midlands Ambulance Service and maybe requested to attend to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests, chest pain, bleeds, diabetic emergencies, strokes, falls and breathing problems."
Dave Frost, CFR Co-ordinator for the group said:
