press_releaseTRAPPED UNDER A TREE

A man is recovering in hospital after a tree fell on him while he was working in Herefordshire.

The incident happened at about 3.45pm on Monday afternoon at the edge of a field about three miles south of Newent.

The Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham was first on scene and was backed up by a land crew and a paramedic manager from neighbouring Great Western Ambulance Service. The ambulance crew were taken to the scene by a member of the public in a 4 x 4 vehicle as the location was about three fields away from the nearest road.

The man was lying in the snow under the tree. He was complaining of severe chest and back pain.

Aircrew paramedic, Ian Roberts, said:
"Thankfully when we got there the man was with his wife and two sons. My aircrew colleague, Colin Apps, is a big lad and was able to work with the two sons to lift the tree off the man; no small feat given the size of the tree. The 53 year old was conscious throughout. We immobilised him using a neck collar and spinal and then airlifted him to University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. With it being the shortest day of the year we were right on the edge of our flying time - if the incident had come in half an hour later, it would have been dark and we would not have been able to go. Given the location, had we not been able to fly there, it would have meant carrying the man by foot over the three fields which would have been difficult at best."
