Air Penguin Fundraiser Takes Off

Two friends from Madeley, near Telford are undertaking a fun, yet slightly bizarre fundraising challenge to raise vital funds and awareness for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

Buffy Shaw and Ange Lewis recently launched ‘Air Penguin’ and will be travelling around the country for a week from 24th May 2014 asking celebrities to sign cuddly penguins. The plan is to collect as many signed penguins in one week as possible and the duo hoping the public will also get involved.  The penguins will then be publicly auctioned off with 50 per cent of the proceeds going to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and the remaindersplit between other air ambulance charities around England.

The Air Penguin idea came about because sadly in 2009, Buffy’s seven year old son Xander died in a tragic accident and the Midlands Air Ambulance crew were the only ones able to reach him in a short space of time.  Because of this, they are determined to raise as much money as possible so the aircrews can carry on their vital work for other families in the region.

Xander’s mum Buffy comments: “His favourite animal was a penguin so we wanted a way of making sure he was with us in a fun way as we raise money.  So far we have raised almost £8,000 but really wanted to do something bigger this year and really make people aware of the work the aircrews do for so many people.”

Maria Jones, regional fundraising manager for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, added: “As a mother I couldn’t possibly imagine losing a son, so my heart goes to Buffy and her family. The fact that she and Ange want to help fund our life saving missions is incredible and we are so grateful for their support. At present each mission we undertake costs £2,500 so we’re always looking for new an innovative ways to raise funds. Air Penguin is really quirky and we’re looking forward to seeing which celebrities get involved to help fund one of the 2,000 missions we carry out each year.”

The Air Penguin campaign is looking for support from celebrities to sign a penguin and anyone able to donate cuddly penguins across the country, so if you could help or know someone that could please contact
