Brian Wellings's story

Dangerous Brian,  one of the first...

Affectionately known as ‘Dangerous Brian’ from Evesham, Brian Wellings was one of the first patients to be airlifted by the new Air Ambulance, and uniquely is the only patient ever to be airlifted to hospital on two separate occasions.

September 6th 1991, is a date the then 16-year old farm worker remembers all too well:

“I was working on a ‘hot processing’ machine at a farm in Flabury near Pershore.  The machine bundles hops and at the time, I was trying to clear the waste products from the machine when my arm got caught between the rollers”.

Before he had chance to realise what was happening, Brian’s arm was wedged in the machine up to his elbow.

"All the emergency services were at the farm trying to release me from the machine. Eventually, the processor was taken to pieces and I was then treated for a severe arm injury and a broken wrist. I managed to stay conscious long enough to witness being loaded through the back doors of the new air ambulance for the journey to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch”.

Not satisfied with one trip in the life saving helicopter, Brian was unfortunate to dislocate his knee on the same farm a couple of years ago and was once again airlifted to hospital.

Brian is now fully recovered from his injuries and continues to work in Flabury.
