Codsall resident Rachael Dawson, who works in the South Staffordshire Council planning department, was riding a friend’s horse in Telford in June 2008, when the horse reared up and landed on top of her.

Rachael received serious multiple injuries and was treated by flight Paramedics at the scene before eventually being airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital by Midlands Air Ambulance, where she received further medical treatment for six weeks. Rachael’s experience prompted six council colleagues to complete the ‘Staffordshire Way Walk Challenge’ in 2009 and raised £4000 for the Midlands Air Ambulance. The team completed the 92 mile walk stretching from Mow Cop in the north to Kinver Edge, all in aid of the Air Ambulance service. The event, organised by the 22nd Signals Regiment of the Army based in Stafford, required teams to complete the challenge in three days. |
The donation to Midlands Air Ambulance was handed over to the duty flight crew, including duty pilot on the day – Andy Bowden - by Rachael and her colleagues during a visit to the Cosford helicopter base. Speaking about her experience, Rachael said:
“I’m not sure I can put into words just how grateful I am to the Midlands Air Ambulance service. I think it’s fantastic what my colleagues have done for me and it’s only because of people like them, who raise money for this charity that this essential service can exist. I never expected to find myself in a situation where I needed the Air Ambulance, but I wouldn’t even want to consider what it would have been like without them.”
