Patient stories

Each year, we treat thousands of patients across the Midlands. Below are some incredible patients who have shared their stories with us

Alistair Robert Keron

When I came round around five minutes later, I was unable to walk.

I understood later on that the travel time to hospital was greatly reduced thanks to the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. I therefore received treatment in hospital much earlier than if I had travelled in a land ambulance.

The treatment I was given by the aircrew on the scene was hugely beneficial to my recovery.

I haven’t made a full recovery but I am extremely grateful for everything they did that day. Without the Midlands Air Ambulance, I don’t believe I would be here to share my story.

Ben Culff

Ben was extremely poorly. A cardiac arrest is when someone’s heart actually stops.

By stabilising Ben, the aircrew were able to get Ben ready for the flight, before transferring him to Stoke Hospital to receive definitive care.

The aircrew were incredible. They talked me through the whole process and gave me the necessary pain relief to avoid causing further distress.

The charity ensured my wife wasn’t taken from us on that fateful day, and it’s so important that people recognise the need for the charity.

The next thing I remember is being in the bottom of the hole.

Without these guys, I may not even be here to tell my tale, I just can’t thank them enough.

I could barely speak due to the pressure on my chest.

I’ve had cancer before, but I feel like this was more life changing for me - I’m definitely lucky to be alive.

Cheryl In Hospital

I only remember seeing the car in front of me swerve, then it all went blank.

Finding out two air ambulances came to my rescue and that I wasn't even expected to survive the journey to hospital was shocking and confirmed just how severe the crash was.

I was a bit of a write-off to be honest.

I'm here because of those wonderful people who never gave up on me, and I can’t thank them enough.

Craig Harris Far Right Wife Parents And Sons Airbase Visit

If someone told me what was about to happen to me, I would never have believed them.

It was overwhelming to meet the aircrew; it was quite emotional for me and my family to go and say thank you. They were brilliant, as were the hospital team at New Cross Hospital.

I was trapped, I tried to get out, but my left leg was stuck.

Without MAAC, I wouldn’t have got to the hospital in time for the lifesaving surgery I needed.

It became immediately apparent that Sophie was critically ill – she was unconscious and had begun to vomit.

Midlands Air Ambulance are heroes in the skies. The crew inspire me every day and I stay positive and determined because I know that negativity gets you nowhere.

I heard a thud, everything went black, and my last thought was I hope they tell my wife what had happened.

They will never know how much it means to me and my family that they saved my life. Thanks to them, I still have a future.
