Midlands Air Ambulance Charity to Deliver New Out-Of-Hospital Advanced Life Support Training Course

Wednesday 24th June 2026

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is set to deliver the Out-of-Hospital Advanced Life Support (OH ALS) course, developed by the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK), to support clinicians working in pre-hospital emergency care.

Adapted from the established Advanced Life Support programme, the course focuses on the practical realities of managing cardiac arrest and critically ill patients outside of hospital, where clinicians must make rapid decisions in challenging and resource-limited environments.

Around 40,000 cardiac arrests occur in the community each year, highlighting the importance of specialist training for emergency responders.

Delivered over two days at the charity’s Cosford airbase and headquarters in Shropshire, the programme combines expert-led teaching, hands-on skills stations, high-fidelity simulation, and interactive workshops. Participants gain experience in both technical procedures and non-technical skills including leadership, communication, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure, all of which directly influence patient outcomes during time-critical incidents.

By the end of the course, attendees will be able to recognise and manage the deteriorating patient using the Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure (ABCDE)  approach, deliver Advanced Life Support across a range of scenarios, and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams during cardiac arrest situations.

Emily Browne, head of education and training at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: "Pre-hospital emergency care presents unique challenges that require training which reflects the realities of the environment. This nationally recognised RCUK course combines ALS learning objectives with realistic, scenario-based teaching, helping clinicians build the confidence and consistency needed to deliver high-quality care when it matters most."

Applicants must hold, or be training for, a recognised healthcare qualification. Final-year medical students may be accepted where part of an established local arrangement.

Places are limited to ensure a focused learning experience. The first course will take place on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th September 2026, with a second session scheduled for Thursday 4th and Friday 5th February 2027.
