Shropshire Volunteer Starts 1000 Mile Bike Challenge for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity

Tuesday 9th June 2026

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s volunteer, Alison Lamputt, has started her challenging 1,000-mile bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) to raise money for the charity.

This iconic challenge comes at a double milestone, as Alison marks a big birthday while the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity celebrates 35 years of lifesaving service.

Starting from Land’s End, Alison pedals through Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset, bypassing Bristol to cross the Severn Bridge. Alison will head north along the Welsh border, skirt Manchester, and pass the Lake District into Scotland. After traversing the Southern Uplands, Alison will cross the Grampians to Loch Linnhe. The route then runs through Fort William, follows the Great Glen past Loch Ness, and traces the coast to John O’Groats where Alison will complete her epic challenge.

Alison said: “You never know when you might need the critical care of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, and since they receive no government funding, every penny raised keeps them in the air. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my milestone birthday than tackling this 1,000-mile ride. It's going to be a tough two weeks, but knowing the money raised will help save lives will keep me pedalling all the way to John O’Groats.”

Alison has already exceeded her fundraising goal by raising over £1,200 and the numbers keep going up.

Pip Machin, Shropshire fundraising executive at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “Alison is a wonderful part of our volunteer team, and we are so grateful that she is taking on such an inspiring challenge to mark her milestone birthday. It takes an incredible amount of determination and commitment to take on LEJOG and seeing her go above and beyond is truly fantastic. The funds she raises are vital because we receive no government funding, meaning fundraisers like Alison are the reason our crew can bring advanced, lifesaving care to those in critical need across the region and save lives.”

Since being founded in May 1991, the charity has responded to more than 80,000 missions to bring advanced pre-hospital clinical care directly to the incident scene giving patients the best chance of survival and recovery.

Generous support from fundraisers like Alison ensures the charity can continue delivering its lifesaving service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
