A prospective, randomised trial of pre-oxygenation strategies available in the pre-hospital environment

Pre-oxygenation before tracheal intubation aims to increase the safe apnoea duration especially when rapid sequence intubation techniques are being used. This prospective, randomised, cross-over study of 30 volunteers aimed to compare a number of techniques currently available. They concluded that in their volunteers, the use of a bag-valve-mask or portable ventilator were superior to the use of the non-rebreath mask.
